Recently, I was called to become more involved in my community through an initiative at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church – a mentoring program for youth in the juvenile justice system. Upon learning about the program, my feelings were complex – youth at risk present difficult challenges. Patience and commitment are required for any small success. But there was also an exciting hint that I might positively impact someone who needs patience and commitment.
I am starting small– a summer’s worth of visits to assist a selected group of young men and women on a special project. It will be hard work. Emotional barriers will come into play. But, I am hoping for mutuality. Wish us luck!
